Dalhousie University’s department of Theatre invites the public to a lecture by Dr. Alan Andrews: George Bernard Shaw’s Melodrama: The Devil’s Disciple, which is still playing at Neptune!
If you’ve already seen Neptune’s production of The Devil’s Disciple, this is a great opportunity to hear more about the play and its playwright.

If you haven’t heard, tickets are now on sale at the Neptune box office for The Producers: A New Mel Brooks Musical. The show doesn’t open until April 15, but if history has taught us anything it’s that our last show of the season tends to be a hit! So don’t miss your chance to see this hilarious spectacle.

If you’ve been living under a rock for the past eight years and The Producers doesn’t ring a bell for you, let me tell you a little about it.

Max Bialystock was once the king of Broadway, but now all his shows close on opening night. Things turn around when he’s visited by the neurotic accountant Leo Bloom, who proposes a scheme tailor-made for producers who can only make flops: raise far more money than you need, then make sure the show is despised. No one will be interested in it, so you can pocket the surplus.

To this end, they produce a musical called Springtime for Hitler written by escaped Nazi Franz Liebken. Then they get the insanely flamboyant Roger De Bris to direct. Finally, they hire as a lead actress the loopy Swedish bombshell Ulla (whose last name has over 15 syllables). As opening night draws near, what can go wrong? Well, there’s no accounting for taste…

This play has got it all and then some! The combination of hilarious plot, quirky characters, lavish dance numbers, and outrageous songs makes The Producers one of the must-see events of the year.

Originally written for the silver screen in 1968, The Producers opened on Broadway in 2001 starring Hollywood A-listers Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane and went on to win the most Tony awards ever. It was so successful that in 2005 it was re-made into a major motion picture. Did you catch the movie?

If you haven’t seen the play or the movie, chime in on your favourite Mel Brooks production! Blazing Saddles? Spaceballs? The options are endless!

Run, don’t walk, to the Neptune box office to get your tickets today – or you could always call 429-7070 or visit www.neptunetheatre.com.

We just wanted to take a moment and tell everyone about an exciting new event happening here at Neptune. We just launched the Trident New Play Competition which is a National playwriting competition open to all Canadians. We’ve got our fingers crossed that it will be a big success and we’re definitely hoping to find a great new play. The competition is open to all genres but the plays must be full length (normally considered a minimum of 75 pages) and in English. We’re open to adaptations as long as the writer has secured legal clearance of the material. The deadline for entry is January 28th, as long as your entry is postmarked no later than that date we’ll accept it.

Three finalists will be chosen to receive a staged reading by a professional cast which the writer will be brought in to attend. From the finalists one play will be chosen to move onto the workshop stage and will be considered for production in an upcoming season.

The value of readings and workshops is immense to playwrights regardless of experience level as it gives the play a chance to get up on its feet supported by a team of professionals. The writer can hear their words spoken aloud, address problems with plot, character, and dialogue ultimately strengthening their piece and moving it one step closer to production.
