So… here I am at midnight after a preview of Plaid Tidings (which, if you are reading this, you must know ALL about already), trying to figure out what to write.
First I thought I would fill a blog with insightful looks into the behind-the-scenes process at Neptune Theatre. The truth is, though, I probably don’t know even 1/10th of all the hard work that goes into a production when I’m not there. And I am SURE I would leave something or someone out and so my insight really wouldn’t be that insightful at all.
THEN I thought I might do a blog where I dish about all the delightfully naughty goings-on behind the scenes. The blog would be filled with everyone’s deep dark secrets, the in-fighting, and backstabbing. But the truth is, it’s all pretty tame. Every single person on the team seems to get along really well and we 4 Plaids all really like each other…. or pretend to… No. Wait. We really do.
So THAT idea went out the window.
My third idea was to just have Jeff Moulton write my blog for me because he’s, like, super funny and stuff. But he refused. Or would have if I’d asked.
So… I had to abandon those three options. But as an alternative, in the spirit of the season, I’m going to compile a list of things that combines my three favourite things: Christmas, youtube, and being kinda weird.
Without further ado, I now present AARON KYTE’S FAVOURITE YOUTUBE CHRISTMAS THINGS (A VERY INCOMPLETE LIST)
1) The first Christmas song. Growing up, Boney M’s Christmas album was, essentially, the soundtrack of the Holidays. I was convinced that it was a staple in everyone’s house. I grew to find this was not the case. My friends’ ridicule, however, has not shaken my love for this song. Boney M’s ‘Feliz Navidad,’ in all its synthesized, repetitive glory, still makes me feels like a little kid on Christmas morning.

2) The worst Christmas song ever. I really have nothing to say about this song except that I hate it just enough that I have to listen to it every year just to REMIND myself that I shouldn’t ever listen to it again. It’s a vicious cycle, really. I know some people love cats… and while I agree that kittens are cute, I am so allergic that I really can’t love them. PLUS which, after this video, I think they’re terrible musicians.

3) The best Christmas song of the last 20 years.Even though I am a traditionalist at heart, there is something so super-catchy about this song that I can’t stop listening to it. It doesn’t matter how crazy Mariah Carey is. And she is crazy. Super crazy. Like, Michael Jackson crazy. But here’s what I think: she can keep collecting Hello Kitty memorabilia, having breakdowns, sleeping in a room with 100 humidifiers, eating all the purple foods she wants, and marrying as many Nick Cannons as she needs to as long as she keeps singing this song.

4) The best Christmas song ever recorded by a Lohan. For anyone who doubts that Lindsay Lohan had a tough childhoods. I urge you to watch this video and NOT acknowledge how hard it must have been for her to grow up in the shadow of her younger sister Ali. Highlights of this particular song include 12 year-old Ali’s amazing air-guitar skills, her vocal riffs, and her incredible talent when it comes to word painting. Notice how she actually points to her eye on the lyric ‘mistletoe hung where you can SEE.’ Talent.

and last, but not least….
It doesn’t matter where you grew up, or what your religious views are. It doesn’t matter if you like GIVING gifts better that RECEIVING. It doesn’t matter if you like turkey with stuffing and gravy or if you prefer tofurkey with gluten free side dishes and flavoured soy paste. It’s all irrelevant and it all pales in comparison to the most important and wonderful part of Christmas.
There is really only ONE THING that binds us all together at Christmas:

So… there you have it. If I were Oprah, these would be my ‘favourite things.’ If I were Martha Stewart, they’d be ‘Good things.’ But since I’m just me, they’re just things. My things… that I wanted to share with you.
And if you can think of any that I might like, please pass them along. My house in Halifax doesn’t have a fireplace, so I need something to curl up in front of this Holiday season.
