26 October 2009 - Adaptation of the Greatest Atlantic Canadian Book of All Time Onstage Neptune Theatre’s Fountain Hall
Fiddles are being tuned and Celtic laments sung as the cast of No Great Mischief takes the stage. The internationally celebrated and awardwinning novel No Great Mischief by Alistair MacLeod opens this week at Neptune Theatre’s Fountain Hall.
MacLeod’s No Great Mischief was just named the best Atlantic Canadian book of all time. Chronicling the MacDonald Clan’s voyage from the Scottish to the Cape Breton Highlands, No Great Mischief is the story of two brothers who must come to terms with each other, the world and their family legacy.
“Theatre is an important and accessible way to explore and celebrate our history and to keep our stories alive,” says Artistic Director George Pothitos. “As Nova Scotia’s flagship theatre, it’s an honour and a thrill to present the Atlantic Canadian premiere of this beloved story.”
The first performance of No Great Mischief, on Tuesday, October 27, features a special audience member, Alistair MacLeod. MacLeod is in Halifax reading at the Keshen Goodman Library and is extending his visit to enjoy No Great Mischief on Neptune’s stage.
Adapted from the novel by David S. Young, No Great Mischief is directed by Canadian theatre stalwart Richard Rose. Rose helped develop the play and acted as an early dramaturge, as well as directing the original production at Tarragon Theatre. Including Nova Scotians John Dunsworth, Martha Iriving, Shannon Lynch and Billy MacLellan, the cast also features Duncan Fraser, Stephen Guy-McGrath, David McIlwraith and Scott Owen.
Tuesday, October 27 is Pay What You Can night, with the play officially opening on Friday, October 30, running until November 15. Evening performance times are Tuesday to Friday at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. and Sundays at 7:30 p.m. Matinee performances are held on Saturdays at 4:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Ticket prices start at $15 (+tax) and are available through the Neptune Theatre Box Office at 429-7070 or www.neptunetheatre.com.
Neptune Theatre is located at 1593 Argyle Street, Halifax. With two stages, Fountain Hall and the Studio, a Theatre School and its Young Neptune Company Tour, Neptune continues to produce world-class theatre.
