16 October 2008 - The Trial of Richard Nixon
With the final ballots counted on the Canadian Federal election and an American presidential election just two weeks away, Neptune Theatre gets political with its production of Peter Morgan’s Frost/Nixon – opening next week in Fountain Hall.
Directed by Joseph Ziegler, and starring Jim Mezon as Richard Nixon and Clive Walton as David Frost, the play recreates the real life events leading up to, and during, the historic 1977 series of interviews, in which the disgraced ex-president acknowledged his guilt for Watergate.
“With the news headlines being dominated by politics these days this production is extremely timely, even though it chronicles an event that happened over 30 years ago,” says Neptune Theatre General Manager Doreen Malone. “For all his faults, Nixon was an extremely compelling figure, and it’s interesting to compare his accomplishments against those of today’s world leaders.”
Writer Morgan has developed a reputation for re-creating historic figures, as he wrote the scripts for Academy Award winning films The Queen and The Last King of Scotland - about Queen Elizabeth II and Idi Amin respectively. A film adaptation of Frost/Nixon directed by Ron Howard will also open in movie theatres this December and has already generated Oscar buzz.
Tuesday, October 21st is “Pay What You Can” night, with the play officially opening on Friday, October 24th. A special IN CONVERSATIONS session hosted by Dalhousie Political Science Professor Dr. Gilbert Winham will be held following the October 29th show. Evening performance times are Tuesday to Friday 8:00 pm, Saturday 8:30 pm and Sunday 7:30 pm. Matinee performances are held on Saturday at 4:00 pm and Sunday at 2:00 pm. Ticket prices start at $15 (+tax). Frost/Nixon runs until November 16th.
Experience the on camera and behind-the-scenes drama of perhaps the most famous presidential interview in television history. Tickets are available by contacting the Neptune Theatre Box Office at 429-7070 or online at www.neptunetheatre.com.
Neptune Theatre is located at 1593 Argyle Street, Halifax. With two stages, Fountain Hall and the Studio, a Theatre School and its Young Neptune Company Tour, Neptune continues to produce world-class theatre.
