Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf
About the play
Late one night, after a university faculty soirée, George and Martha welcome a younger couple into their home. As the alcohol flows and dawn approaches, the young couple are drawn into George and Martha’s complex games until the evening reaches its climax in a moment of devastating truth-telling.
Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf is a dark comedy that has resonated across the decades. As one of the most raw, and psychologically intense portrayals of a marriage in modern drama, the play is full of piercing truths, acerbic wit, but always a hilarious battle of wills.

Character Breakdown:
Please indicate the role that is of interest to you. Genders implied are those of the characters, and not necessarily those of the actors who will play them. We encourage artists of all genders to apply.
George, 46, an Associate Professor of history, married to Martha, the daughter of the college President. He appears somewhat ineffectual, particularly alongside Martha's powerful personality. He is manipulative in his disillusionment, personal failure, and the psychological games that define his marriage. George masks his vulnerability with vicious wit and psychological control, but beneath the games and cruelty lies a deep, painful love for Martha that ultimately defines their bond.
Martha, 52, the daughter of the college President and George's wife. Martha is disappointed in aspects of her life, craves intimacy, and can dominate a room with her words. Her wit is biting and she owns her sexuality unapologetically. She is a brilliant mind, a magnetic figure. She appears to control the emotional landscape around her. She’s both victim and aggressor, wounded yet astonishingly strong—a woman who strips away illusion only to find herself exposed and afraid, but still standing.
Nick, 28, a young, ambitious biology Professor, new to the college. He is eager to advance his career and impress others, but becomes increasingly entangled in the games and emotional turmoil of George and Martha's relationship. He is transactional, and seemingly reserved but takes part in the games Martha and George are playing. He allows himself to be seduced as a way to gain power and leverage but this reveals his moral ambiguity and desire for control.
Honey, 26, Nick's wife, somewhat naive however, knows more than she lets on. She is fascinated, and a little intimated, by the antics of George and Martha. She joins the party, becoming drunker over the course of the night. She wants to dance! She appears not to engage too deeply however she seems to instinctively understand that truth in this social setting is dangerous.
